Aligning Care to Fit: Eating Disorders and College Students

About this live event

Transitioning from high school to college can be an exciting time marked by increased independence and self-discovery. However, young adults are also at increased risk for the development and worsening of eating disorders during that same time. Often, individuals can be hesitant to disclose their struggles and seek support, for fear that this will impact their collegiate experience. However, advancements in the field of eating disorder care have increased the options available to young adults to treat their eating disorder and get back on track with their college career.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least 3 risk factors associated with eating disorder development, maintenance, and acceleration for college students.
  • Articulate at least 2 possible options for increased support and 2 possible challenges for accessing support for college students with eating disorders
  • Verbalize benefits of approaching eating disorder care for collage students with flexibility, creativity and through an intersectional lens.

Target Audience

Professional counselors, mental health professionals, dietitians, social workers, healthcare providers, and individuals seeking to expand their knowledge in these areas.

Agenda

60 minutes total 10 minutes- review of current state of EDs and current risk factors for development 10 minutes - identification of barriers to care and treatment 10 minutes- Identification of supports available on college campuses and outside of treatment settings 5 minutes- identification of barriers to supports on college campuses and outside of treatment settings 10 minutes- overview of traditional treatment options and new options for care 5 minutes- case example/vignette 5-10 minutes for questions

  • Katherine McMahon, MSSA, LISW-S

    Katherine (Katie) McMahon (she/her/hers), MSSA, LISW-S is a Clinical Trainer for Accanto Health and works as an outpatient therapist at Gather Behavioral Health location in Cleveland, Ohio. She has been working in the field of eating disorder treatment since 2015 and concentrates on the utilization of CBT-E for adults. Katie has a special interest in working with clients who are diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder (BED), those who are experiencing body image issues, explore ways to increase inclusive care for marginalized populations and exploring the intersection between chronic health conditions/disability and eating disorders. Katie has experience providing individual therapy and group therapy in both outpatient and higher level of care settings and also serves as a licensure supervisor for social workers in both adult and adolescent residential and PHP settings. As a clinical trainer, Katie has a passion for all things CBT and supporting new and seasoned staff through onboarding, supervision, a bi-weekly CBT-E consult group and a weekly ED fundamentals group for the Midwest region. Prior to her work at TEP, Katie worked in community mental health as both a case manager and a Program Manager, a hospital setting and a free clinic. Katie has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Bowling Green State University and completed her graduate education at the Case Western Reserve University Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences with a concentration on medical social work.

Attendance Policy

All attendance will be monitored and recorded. Due to accreditation guidelines, continuing education credit will not be awarded to participants who do not attend a presentation in its entirety. Participants not meeting this time requirement will not be awarded continuing education (CE) credits. We recommend logging on to the webinar 10 minutes prior to the session start time to earn satisfactory attendance for CE credits. 


Evaluation of each session will also be required in order to obtain any continuing education (CE) certificates.
