Complex Connections: Understanding the Relationship Between Trauma and Eating Disorders

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Trauma and eating disorders often co-occur and can create complex clinical presentations that impact assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning. This session will explore the relationship between traumatic experiences and eating disorder behaviors, review current research on prevalence and risk factors across different populations, and discuss how these symptoms can reinforce one another. Participants will also review evidence-based, trauma-informed, and integrated treatment approaches that support whole-person recovery. While this session is designed primarily for healthcare and behavioral health professionals, it will also offer helpful insight for individuals and families who want to better understand this intersection.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the relationship between trauma exposure and eating disorders, including shared symptoms and risk factors identified in current research.
  • Explain how trauma responses and eating disorder behaviors may functionally reinforce one another in clinical presentations.
  • Identify evidence-based and trauma-informed treatment approaches that support integrated care for individuals experiencing both trauma-related symptoms and eating disorders.
