OCD and Eating Disorders: Assessment and Treatment Strategies

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has a surprising amount of overlap with eating disorders. OCD can occur prior to, during, or after resolution of acute phases of eating disorder symptoms. In addition, when OCD and eating disorders overlap in an individual, the OCD symptoms can be distinct from eating disorder symptoms, or the OCD symptoms can directly affect eating behaviors. The course will review foundational elements of understanding OCD, and review phenomenology of the overlap of OCD and eating disorders. Clinical assessment strategies to identify OCD will be highlighted. Treatment strategies for OCD will be presented, with an emphasis on how treatment may or may not need to be adjusted for an individual who also has an eating disorder. Psychotherapy techniques, psychopharmacology approaches, and medical interventions will be included in the treatment overview.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe at least two obsessions and two compulsions associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • State three ways in which obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can overlap with eating behaviors.
  • Identify the first-line psychotherapy technique used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • Identify the first-line psychopharmacological treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
