Social Media: The Good, The Bad, and Everything in Between

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Movies, commercials, magazines, and websites portray people who are thin, fit, and "beautiful" as ideal. Underweight models and Photoshopped images of perfection are everywhere. Weight loss and image-enhancing beauty products send the message that being thinner and more attractive is the key to popularity, happiness, and success. This course will examine the impact of social media on body image, highlighting research that shows the negative effects of media consumption on some young people today. We will discuss how Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and other media platforms affect the development of self-image and eating disorders.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify different types of social media platforms
  • Identify risks associated with consumption of social media in youth
  • Recognize warning signs for eating disorder behaviors and the relationship between eating disorders and social media

Professional counselors, mental health professionals, dietitians, social workers, healthcare providers, and individuals seeking to expand their knowledge in these areas.
